Learning Outcome 1 (U21): Be able to generate ideas for an original media product based on a client brief (P1, M1)
Generating Ideas:
Learning objective 1: Be able to generate ideas for an original media product based on an original media product based on client brief
The Brief:
Requirements:
The explicit demands are:
- making a front page and double page spread
- MUST be based in North London,
- showcasing talent.
- Furthermore, it has to be unique and local.
The implicit requirements:
- The target audience should be locals in north London
- Young audience as its based on upcoming talents
- "Vibrant music scene" suggests the magazine should be aimed at the younger generation, including females and males. I would infer the age range would be approximately 16-25 years-old.
The requirements that are open to interpretation:
- The original content of the magazine
- How I choose to pitch my idea
Three key ideas:
Idea one:
Genre- Pop/acoustic and grime
Acoustic Music is music that solely or primarily uses instruments and the raw talent of the singer. Famous Acoustic music includes top hits like Let Her go by Passenger, Thinking out loud by Ed Sheeran. Upcoming artists are choosing the acoustic genre because of inspiration like Ed Sheeran and many opportunities for open mics. As many want to listen to open mics especially
in North London.
Another idea could be grime and rap. This genre has risen in popularity rapidly over the last few years with clear breakthrough artists like Stormzy and Giggs. Younger audiences enjoy this style of music as many can relate to the lyrics of the majority of rap songs. In addition, the wireless festival in Finsbury park features many grime artists.
Furthermore, Pop Music is an extremely popular music genre. The upbeat, feel-good mood music is a must-see concert in North London. Famous Pop songs are Side to side by Ariane Grande, Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars and an upcoming Artist called Freya Ridings with Lost Without You. The Cost of my Magazine will be £2.99. The reasoning behind this as its more affordable, as my target audience may be in university/students, (16-20-year-old female), they will be more likely to buy a cheaper magazine. The Colour Scheme is Red, Light Blue and white. The content of my magazine could feature interviews with the artist and q&a from the readers, who will submit questions on social media platforms.
Idea 2:
The specific artist who perform acoustic popMy magazine will focus on promoting one upcoming
North London artist per month. This will not only inspire
my readers but also reflects the vibrant music scene developing locally.
An example of one edition that I could focus my magazine on
is the artist Freya Ridings.
Freya Ridings is an upcoming artist within North London. Her song featured on Love Island with the song Lost Without you. Her genre is pop, however, she records and performs acoustically. She has performed at the Hackney roundhouse, which is a venue in North London. The simple video of her playing the piano and performing lost without you it has passed 1 million views on Youtube. Her Latest single 'maps' is already providing to do the same as word begins to spread of this Young talent.
Freya ridings seems a good fit as the first featured artists for my magazine and she is a great inspiration for the target audience of my magazine; 16-20-year-old females of all ethnicities.
Moreover, many students can relate to their songs. Freya Ridings represents north London as she was raised up in Palmers Green. She started off singing in many venues in North London.
As my target audience is young, Freya is a trendy style and will stand out on the front page compared to others. I will ensure that future artists featured within my magazine continue to inspire the fashion choices of my target audience.
The content will feature a q&a where readers and fans have a chance to ask the artists questions. Additionally, I will include interviews with artists and tips on how to write songs.
Idea 3:
Venue- The Roundhouse
I will be featuring a different venue in north London every month to feature in my magazines.
Venues such as Roundhouse, Koko, Finsbury Park, o2 academy. I will rate these venues based on price, experience, musicians featured, environment and view. This will inform my readers what the venue is like and upcoming concerts. For example, The roundhouse will be in one of my issues:
The Roundhouse is a performing art and concert venue situated in Chalk Farm, London. It was originally built in 1847 by the London and North Western Railway as a roundhouse. However, in 2006 it underwent a multi-million-pound redevelopment. It has hosted the BBC electric prom, numerous iTunes festivals and the Vodafone live music awards. The redeveloped roundhouse allows 3,300 people standing and 1,700 seated. The adaptable performance space allows the artists and audience opportunities and experiences you cannot find anywhere else. It perfectly reflects the excitement and diversity of the twenty-first-century culture. This is the main reason why the roundhouse is a perfect suit for my vibrant music magazine.
The Roundhouse is a hub of inspiration where artists and emerging talent create extraordinary work and where young people can grow creatively as individuals. It enables young people the chance to engage with the arts through music, media and performance projects, inspires them to reach further,
dream bigger, and achieve more. As my music artist and target audience are young this venue enables young people to gain experiences from attending concerts at the Roundhouse. Furthermore, images like this will be on my magazine to capture the atmosphere at the Roundhouse. As this is a very well known venue it will make people want to read the magazine. The cost of my magazine is £2.99, the reasoning behind this is because my price is lower than other magazines and students will more likely favour my magazine.
Conclusion:
After debating which idea to choose, I have decided to pick Idea 2 - an acoustic pop artist.
I believe this is a good idea as the magazine will focus on promoting one upcoming North London artist per month. This will not only inspire my readers but also reflects the vibrant music scene developing locally. The artists chosen will hopefully influence the fashion choice for readers. Furthermore, Idea 2 enables unplugged to have more content. Some considerations would be interviews, q+a, a day in the life and social media takeovers. I will be incorporating the other ideas. They will have minor involvement. For example, I can feature venues by rating each one that features the artist from that magazine. Rating it via pricing, hospitality, seating e.t.c. This idea relates to the brief because it will be based in North London and will be featuring upcoming artists from that area ( open to interpretation requirement in the brief "vibrant music scene". Furthermore, an explicit requirement was to feature venues in the area. I will meet this expectation by including the rating of venues that will feature in subsequent issues.
